Guayule (Parthenium argentatum) resin: A review of chemistry, extraction techniques, and applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
Guayule (Parthenium argentatum Gray) is a perennial shrub of the Asteraceae family native to arid southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico that produces high-quality, hypoallergenic natural rubber. processing three output streams: high-molecular weight rubber as primary product, mixture resin/low-molecular rubber, fine, dry woody bagasse. The goal this review was evaluate guayule resin source secondary metabolites in order overcome obstacles commercialization by maximizing total economic value extractable fractions, increasing scale robustness extraction methods, while concurrently lowering operational costs environmental impacts separations. Based on literature current market prices, applications with highest potential are residential pesticides (with specific price range 1.1–6.8 USD/kg), paints coatings (0.7–6.0 wood preservative (0.8–6.0 amine-epoxy strippable (0.8–2.5 adhesives (0.125–1.60 USD/kg). separation methods greatest for scale-up pressurized solvent extractions, such supercritical CO2 extraction, due their reduced times, energy requirements, consumption.

Biochemical regulation of rubber biosynthesis in guayule (Parthenium argentatum Gray)
Natural rubber is an irreplaceable raw material vital to industry, transportation, medicine and defense. It is largely produced from clonal plantations of Hevea brasiliensis in southeastern Asia. Temperate-zone rubber-producing crops are greatly desired to increase biodiversity, protect supplies, and provide a safe natural-rubber alternative for the large numbers of people suffering from Type I...
متن کاملA century of guayule: Comprehensive Genetic Characterization of the Guayule (Parthenium argentatum A. Gray) USDA Germplasm Collection
The fragility of a single-source, geographically concentrated supply of natural rubber, a critical material of the modern economy, has brought guayule ( Parthenium argentatum A. Gray) to the forefront as an alternative source of natural rubber. The improvement of guayule for commercial-scale production has been limited by the lack of genomic tools and well-characterized genetic resources requ...
متن کاملSC-CO2 Extraction of guayule biomass (Parthenium argentatum) – yield and selectivity towards valuable co-products, lipids and terpenics
Guayule (Parthenium argentatum) a shrub native to Mexico, is now being acclimated in Europe as a potential crop. The main extractible fractions are polyisoprene (similar to Hevea rubber) for producing tires and allergy-free gloves and resin (GRe). This work deals with valorising this last fraction, after water-based extraction of the latex. To date GRe has not been extensively investigated, in ...
متن کاملTranscriptome and gene expression analysis in cold-acclimated guayule (Parthenium argentatum) rubber-producing tissue.
Natural rubber biosynthesis in guayule (Parthenium argentatum Gray) is associated with moderately cold night temperatures. To begin to dissect the molecular events triggered by cold temperatures that govern rubber synthesis induction in guayule, the transcriptome of bark tissue, where rubber is produced, was investigated. A total of 11,748 quality expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were obtained. T...
متن کاملVekcha-thielo, Irina Germination of Guayule (parthenium Argentatum Gray) Pollen on an Artificial Medium
The pollen of five diploid and two tetraploid guayule (Parthenium argentatum Gray) plants was cultured on nutrient media. It was observed that guayule pollen is released as tetrads of spores which will not ger minate on the media unless they are separated into individual pollen grains. For each plant, the results of the germination tests varied with the day and the time of day of the pollen co...
